What chimneys
are like here
Westfield is a town of well-kept early-twentieth-century colonials, and the chimney work is correspondingly consistent. Wychwood, Stoneleigh Park and the Gardens were built out largely between 1900 and 1940 in Colonial Revival, Tudor and Dutch Colonial, and most of those houses still have the original masonry chimney with a fireplace on one flue and the heating system on the other.
Because so much of the town went up inside a forty-year window, the chimneys tend to reach the same failure points at the same time. Right now that means crowns and mortar joints. The original crowns were mortar wash, they are ninety to a hundred and twenty years old, and a great many of them are at or past the end of their life.
The other Westfield pattern is the well-maintained house with a fireplace nobody uses. Plenty of these homes have had the same owners for decades and the fireplace gets lit twice a winter, which means very little creosote — but also means the flue has not been looked at in twenty years, and an unswept, uncapped flue accumulates debris and nesting material regardless of whether you burn in it.
On our Westfield calls
What we find most
- Original mortar-wash crowns at the end of their service life
- Open mortar joints needing repointing above the roofline
- Rarely used flues that have gone decades without inspection
- Missing caps allowing debris and nesting into the flue
None of that is unusual for the housing stock here, and most of it is cheaper to deal with early. The $49 inspection tells you which of these you actually have.

Westfield questions
Straight answers
Do you actually come out to Westfield?
Yes. We cover Westfield and the rest of New Jersey, and we work there regularly. Same-day is often available if you call before noon.
What does it cost in Westfield?
An inspection is $49 and a cleaning is $99, the same as everywhere else we work in New Jersey. There is no travel surcharge for Westfield.
How long does it take?
An inspection on a typical single-flue house is about forty-five minutes to an hour. A cleaning is usually ninety minutes to two hours depending on the condition of the flue and roof access.
How often should a chimney be cleaned?
Once a year for any chimney in regular use. If you heat with wood as a main heat source you may need it more than once a season, and we will show you the photographs that support that recommendation rather than just asserting it.
