Smoke Coming Back Into the Room
A fireplace that pushes smoke into the room is telling you the draft has failed. Sometimes that is trivial. Sometimes it means the flue is blocked, which is a carbon monoxide problem as much as a smoke problem.

Smoke coming back into the room, a burning smell after a fire, an animal in the flue, or water running down the chimney breast — stop using the fireplace and call us.
Stop using it until you know why
Smoke entering the room means combustion gases are not leaving through the flue. Smoke is the visible part. Carbon monoxide is the part you cannot see or smell, and it takes the same path. If your fireplace or stove is pushing smoke back into the room, stop using it and get the flue looked at before you light it again.
The usual causes, in the order we find them
- Blockage. A nest, fallen liner tile, or years of debris sitting on the smoke shelf. The most common cause and the most dangerous.
- The damper. Partly closed, warped, or rusted so it no longer opens fully.
- A cold flue. An exterior chimney on a cold morning holds a column of cold, dense air that the fire has to push out of the way. Common in New Jersey from November onward.
- House pressure. Modern tight houses, bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and dryers can pull the house negative so the chimney runs backwards. Crack a window near the fireplace and see if the smoking stops — that is a useful test you can do yourself.
- Flue sizing. A flue too large or too small for the firebox opening never drafts properly. Usually shows up after someone changed the appliance.
What we do about it
We put a camera up the flue and find out which of those it is. A blockage is cleared with the cleaning. A damper or firebox problem gets photographed and quoted. A sizing or draft problem gets explained properly, because the fix depends entirely on the cause and there is no point selling you a liner for a pressure problem.

Straight answers
Why does it only smoke when I first light it?
Almost always a cold flue. The chimney is full of cold air and the fire has to reverse it. Warming the flue first - a rolled newspaper torch held up in the damper opening for a minute - usually solves it. If it smokes throughout the burn, that is a different problem.
Can a chimney cap cause smoking?
A damaged or clogged cap can, yes. Mesh packed with soot or nesting material restricts the opening. It is one of the things we check from the roof.
