What chimneys are like in Newark
Newark has some of the oldest housing stock we work on anywhere in Essex County, and that shows up in the chimneys. In Forest Hill the big turn-of-the-century Colonial Revival and Victorian houses were built with three and four separate flues in a single stack, one for each fireplace plus the original heating appliance. Most of those flues have never been lined. They were built with brick-on-brick construction and parged mortar, which was the standard in 1905 and is not something you want venting a modern gas furnace in 2026.
Weequahic and the North Ward are dominated by 1920s and 1930s brick colonials and Tudors. Those chimneys are generally in better shape structurally, but nearly all of them were built for coal, converted to oil, then converted again to gas. Each conversion left the flue more oversized than the appliance venting into it. An oversized flue means flue gases cool before they reach the top, condense on the way, and eat the mortar joints from the inside out. When a homeowner in the North Ward tells us the inside of their chimney breast is staining or the wallpaper near the ceiling keeps peeling, that is usually what is happening.
The Ironbound is a different job again. The two- and three-family houses there sit shoulder to shoulder, and chimneys are often shared or built into a party wall with very little clearance. Access matters as much as skill. We work off the roof where we can get to it safely and from inside the firebox where we cannot, and we do not guess about which flue serves which unit -- we verify it, because in a three-family that question is the whole safety question.
