What chimneys
are like here
Jersey City is rowhouse country, and rowhouse chimneys behave differently to anything in the suburbs. Downtown, through Hamilton Park, Van Vorst and Paulus Hook, the housing is largely 1870s to 1910s brick and brownstone terraces built shoulder to shoulder, with the chimney stacks running up inside shared party walls. A single stack often carries three or four separate flues, and the divisions between them are original brick that has had a century and a half to deteriorate.
Most of these houses have been renovated at least once, frequently several times, and the fireplaces are where that history shows. It is very common to find decorative mantels in Jersey City brownstones with the flues abandoned, capped off or simply built over during a conversion, while the heating appliance vents into one of the remaining flues. Working out what is actually connected to what is the bulk of the job here, and it is not something you can determine from the room.
The Heights and Bergen-Lafayette have more two- and three-family frame housing from the same era. There the recurring issue is the same one we find across dense multi-family New Jersey: appliances replaced one at a time over decades by whoever was cheapest, vented into whatever opening was nearest, with nobody checking whether the flue was sized for it.
