What $49 actually gets you
A chimney inspection should answer one question: is it safe to use this winter, yes or no. To answer it honestly a technician has to look at the parts of the chimney you can't see — the inside of the flue, the crown at the top, the smoke shelf behind the damper. That's what we do, and it takes us roughly forty-five minutes to an hour on a typical single-flue house.

The photographs are the point
Anyone can come to your house, look up your chimney with a flashlight, and tell you it needs two thousand dollars of work. You have no way to check that. The reason we scan the flue with a camera and send you the images is so that you can see the condition of your own chimney with your own eyes and make your own decision.
If your chimney is fine, the report says it's fine and we go home. That happens often, and it's a perfectly good outcome for a forty-nine dollar visit.
When you need one
Once a year is the standard for any chimney that gets used, and the reason is that the two things that make a chimney dangerous — creosote buildup and blockage — both accumulate over a season and neither is visible from the room. Beyond the annual check, get an inspection if you've just bought the house, if you've not used the fireplace in several years and want to start, if you've had any work done on your heating system, after a chimney fire or a serious storm, or if you're smelling smoke or seeing staining on the chimney breast.

Do I need an inspection if the chimney hasn't been used in years?
That's the case where a scan matters most. An unused flue collects debris and nests, mortar joints move with the frost, and a liner can crack without anyone knowing. The $49 scan tells you what's up there before you light anything.
Will you inspect a chimney that only serves a furnace or a water heater?
Yes. Gas appliances vent through a flue as well, and because nobody sweeps them they're the ones we most often find scaled or partly blocked. Same $49 inspection.
Do I get to see what the camera sees?
You get the photographs in a written report the same day. If something needs work you can see the reason for yourself instead of taking our word for it.
Is an inspection worth doing before I buy the house?
It's one of the cheapest checks in a purchase. A home inspection rarely goes up the flue, and a cracked liner is a bill worth knowing about before closing, not after.
