Paterson is a mill city, and its housing was built for mill workers and mill owners at the same time, which gives you two very different kinds of chimney a few blocks apart. Around Eastside Park there are large, well-built houses from the 1890s through the 1920s with proper multi-flue masonry stacks. Through Riverside, Sandy Hill and People's Park the stock is dense two- and three-family frame houses from the same period, built fast and close together.
In the multi-family housing the recurring issue is that one chimney is doing more work than it was ever designed to do. A three-family with three heating appliances and three water heaters may have two usable flues. Over the decades appliances get replaced one at a time by whoever is cheapest that week, and things get vented into whatever opening is closest. We find improperly combined venting in Paterson more than in any other town we serve, and it's the single most dangerous thing on this list, because a blocked or overloaded flue in an occupied three-family puts carbon monoxide in front of a lot of people at once.
Hillcrest and the Totowa section are calmer -- more single-family, more 1920s-50s brick and frame colonials, more routine sweeps and caps.
