Princeton has genuinely historic housing — eighteenth and early nineteenth century structures in the historic district and Jugtown, alongside large Victorian and early-1900s houses through the Western Section and more recent development further out. The old houses need to be treated as old houses.
The critical detail is mortar. Masonry from that era was laid with soft lime mortar, deliberately: it is weaker than the brick, which lets the wall move and lets moisture escape through the joint rather than through the brick face. If someone repoints an eighteenth-century chimney with modern portland-based mortar, the joint becomes harder than the brick around it and the brick takes the damage instead. We have seen that done in Princeton and it is expensive and slow to undo. When we quote repointing on a genuinely historic house we quote the appropriate mortar, not the fastest one.
Those older houses also commonly have several flues in one solid masonry mass with no liners and limited separation between them, which is exactly the situation where a camera scan earns its keep. Newer Princeton housing out through Littlebrook and Riverside is conventional twentieth-century work and considerably more straightforward.
